Words of Wisdom on owning a Labrador Retriever. Click the above highlighted links to see our other web pages and pictures of our labs, and pictures of our puppies for sale For seventeen consecutive years the Labrador Retriever has been the highest AKC purebred breed to be registered. Leading all other AKC breeds by over 90 plus thousand. This is due to the fact, and to the credit that the Labrador Retriever strongly deserves because of it's love and loyalty to it's family. Their wonderful personality and temperament with children, and other animals. Their ease in training ability, and the fact that they are the most lovable dog all around. Labrador Retrievers are not born as a trained pet. No pet is born trained. I certainly don't won't to discourage anyone from owning a lab, however I advise serious thought and consideration for the welfare and fairness of the dog. Labrador Retriever's are a working breed. You cannot put one in the backyard, go out once a day to feed him or her, give a little pat on the head. Then go back inside to kick back and watch TV. It just doesn't work that way with a working breed, or any other breed for that matter. Labs are high energetic dogs, and if not exercised and given attention, being a working breed they will find a job on their own if not given one, and it most likely is not going to be the job you had in mind. They can be destructive, and totally out of control....all at the fault of the owner. On a scale of 1 to 10, a Lab in my experience is a 10 on training ability. They are so easy to train, eager to learn, but your training must be enforced. If not trained, or given attention and affection, at no fault of the misunderstood dog, it winds up a statistic in a animal shelter where there is absolutely no shortage of animals. Training your pet is not a chore. It is a bonding period between you and your puppy. Just two or three training sessions a day, no longer than 10 minutes a session for a young dog. Labs learn so quickly with lots of praise and rewards, they are so willing to please their owners. They go out of their way to learn. Labs look at training as a game. They love the time that you are spending together. They love to learn, and then show off what they have learned. Then they will use that training to show off to get your attention. Three things to always remember: Most important things you can give your lab is love, attention, and praise. Trust in your dog. Labs never lie about love. |
