IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO PUPPY BUYERS
When pups are six weeks old from the date they were born, they will go to the vet for their examination. deworming,
and six weeks vaccinations. Once they have had that then pups can be picked up. If pups are flying, they must be
eight weeks old.

It is best to get everything that you will need before puppy comes home. That way you don't have to rush off and
leave puppy alone to get something.

Things you need to have before pup arrives home, food and water bowls. Dog food, puppy pee pads, toys, bedding,
crate if you are going to crate train. For a young pup, if you get a crate make sure it is a smaller crate. Pup will grow
out of it soon. However, if you want to go a head and buy a large crate, partition it off for a smaller area. Dogs like
small places. Larger spaces create insecurity in their minds of predators being able to attack them while they are
sleeping. That is the reason they curl up into a small circle to sleep, they take up a smaller space and feel as though
they are hidden. Also, the smaller space pup has, the less likely pup will soil their sleeping quarters. But puppies do
have accidents and can't hold their bladder or bowels for a long period. As they get older they learn to hold it for a
much longer time. They
soon learn that they don't like to soil their area. Always take puppy out to eliminate before
putting pup in crate. Never-ever use the crate for disciplinary reasons. This is pup
's castle, a place that is pup's and
only pup
's. Pup should love it and have only positive thoughts of it. This is if pup is going to be kept in the house, if
pup is going to be kept outdoors then you will need a dog house. While pup is young, you may want to use sheets
for bedding. I buy twin size flat sheets by the dozen at Wal Mart for $2.96 each. I buy dark color ones, they don't
show stains as much. I don't recommend towels because they snag and that causes interest to a pup/dog. They
learn to play tug of war with them and rip them up. It is a game that they play when they get bored. Old comforters,
they love to rip them and pull out the stuffing. Same with stuffed animals. Once they learn they can rip it and pull the
stuffing out-you will never break them from it. Everyone of my labs will demolish a stuffed animal. Why?? The only
answer is "because they can." It is a game where they will hold it with their feet and pull until they get the stuffing out.
Personally, I have better results with sheets and I just throw them in the washing machine and use them again.

Dog food. Dry dog food is what I feed all my dogs. It keeps their teeth cleaner, and dogs with healthy teeth live
longer. It helps to remove plaque.

Whatever brand of dog food you use make sure it is Large Breed puppy food for the first year. There is a difference
in puppy food and large breed puppy food. A lab is considered a large breed. Without the proper growth and nutrition
needs
, pup could have hip and joint problems. Large breed puppy food slows the growth of the pup so that pup
doesn't grow to fast and have weak bones and joints. Like a tree, you can throw to much nitrogen (fertilizer) to it and
it will grow taller faster, but will have a weak root system and weak limbs. The right amount of nitrogen to a tree and
it will grow with a strong
root system.

I feed Purina One Large Breed puppy food and also Purina Pro Plan Large Breed puppy food. Both dry. I will feed
one for a while, then switch to the other for a change in taste. They are both good dog foods. You can get the Purina
One Large Breed puppy food at Wal-Mart but they don't carry Pro Plan at least not at our local Wal-Mart. Tractor
Supply and some of the pet stores carry Pro Plan. Also, whatever brand you feed, check the ingredients list. If it has
chicken, beef, or lamb as the first ingredient in it, then it is a good dog food. Always make sure the first ingredient is a
meat. If it reads ground yellow corn as the first ingredient walk away from it even though it is cheap. Ground yellow
corn is nothing but yellow cornmeal. Dogs are not vegetarians, they are meat eaters. That is the reason they have
canine
teeth. There are many good brands of dog foods out there, just read the ingredients list first. The first
ingredient is the main
and most thing in the food, the second is the second main and most thing in it and so on. As
you get down the list of ingredients you will see ground yellow corn or wheat or whatever. This is a filler and is ok.
Rice is good in a dog food.

Once my dogs reach a year of age, I then switch them over to a high performance dog food. Same brand, Pro Plan
or Purina One. I switch them out about every three months just so they have something different.

When puppy comes home
and reaches 9 weeks of age he/she will need to go to your vet and get his/her 9 weeks
puppy shots, then at 12 weeks, and again
at 16 weeks. Some vet's give the rabies vac at 12 weeks, some at 16
weeks. Most will start them on heart worm prevention at 12 weeks. Just make sure you have pup on heart worm
prevention by 16 weeks. Pups under four months don't get heart worms, but after that they can.

Another thing-don't give puppy one of your old shoes to play with-they don't know an old shoe from a new shoe, and
you will come home to find that your new or good shoes are torn up. When you give an old shoe to your dog to play
with, you are teaching your dog that shoes are toys. It has your scent on it and puppy loves you and anything with
your scent rubbed in. Puppies find comfort in your scent. Strong scented items being telephones, cell phones,
remote controls. If you leave it out for puppy to reach, pup is going to chew on it. Please keep these things out of
reach from puppy until puppy is old enough to learn better. Something you might want to consider when you put a
clean sheet down for pup's bedding, wipe it all over your
body and clothing. Especially your hands and face. We lose
over 300,000 skin cells a minute. Wipe that scent onto puppy's sheet. Puppy will find comfort just smelling your scent.

When pup comes home, he/she will be bringing a sheet
or blankie home with him/her. It will be rubbed on his/her
litter mates and mom
to have their scent on it. It will be clean but I will rub all the puppies with and the momma dog.
Your puppy will find comfort sleeping on that the first night or two when he gets home. You can then wash it and the
puppy can still smell the scent
for a while, but you won't. Once you have washed it, then you can rub it on yourself so
that puppy has your scent on it as well.
Hope this information is helpful.
